Torres del Paine in Winter: The Wild Soul of Patagonia

This exclusive winter tour begins in the raw, untamed beauty of Torres del Paine National Park, Chile—where snow-dusted peaks, frozen lakes, and golden light create a surreal and cinematic landscape. With its dramatic granite spires, iconic towers, and wildlife-rich valleys, this is Patagonia at its most peaceful and photogenic.

You'll have the opportunity to:

  • Photograph the majestic Torres del Paine at sunrise, when soft winter light sets the granite peaks ablaze in fiery reds and golds, mirrored in still, icy waters like Lago Pehoé and Laguna Amarga.

  • Explore remote trails and highland valleys cloaked in snow, with sweeping views of glaciers, lenga forests, and rugged terrain few get to witness in winter.

  • Spend a full day tracking and photographing wild pumas, guided by expert local trackers who know the territory and behaviors of these elusive big cats. This rare and intimate encounter is a highlight of the trip and a bucket-list experience for any wildlife photographer.

Each session is timed for peak winter light, with personalised coaching, expert guidance, and location scouting from Timothy Poulton. Whether it’s capturing a puma in motion or chasing atmospheric light over the mountains, this winter journey is designed to elevate your photography in one of the wildest places on Earth.

  • Where turquoise waters shimmer beneath the jagged skyline of the Cuernos del Paine. At sunrise or sunset, the peaks often ignite with colour while reflections dance across the icy surface, offering iconic wide-angle and telephoto compositions.

  • Nearby, the Salto Grande waterfall roars with force, its icy spray contrasting beautifully against the dark volcanic rock. It’s a prime location for long exposures, where smooth, flowing water meets the starkness of a frozen foreground.

  • At Laguna Amarga, we’ll greet the morning mist as it lifts off the water, revealing a mirror-perfect reflection of the towering granite spires known as the Torres. Here, sunrise sessions are often accompanied by ethereal alpenglow and frost-covered grasses, making for surreal and tranquil scenes.

  • A visit to Grey Glacier introduces a palette of deep blues and silvers, where we may take a winter boat excursion across Lago Grey to photograph drifting icebergs, cracked glacier faces, and windswept textures that feel otherworldly in their isolation.

  • For the adventurous, a winter trek to Mirador Base Torres—conditions permitting—rewards with an epic view of the three iconic towers rising above a frozen lake. This is one of the most powerful compositions in the park, framed by snowy alpine surroundings.

  • At Nordenskjöld Lake, shifting clouds and light play over the water, with sweeping views of the Cuernos that constantly change in mood. Sunrise or golden hour here is particularly rewarding, especially when framed with foreground textures like icy branches or frozen reeds.

El Calafate & El Chaltén: Glaciers, Spires & Alpine Wilderness

From Torres del Paine, the adventure continues across the border into Argentina, where the next chapter of your photographic journey unfolds among the windswept steppe and towering icefields of El Calafate and El Chaltén.

Highlights include:

  • A full-day excursion to the Perito Moreno Glacier, where you’ll witness the sheer scale and power of this active ice wall calving into turquoise waters—perfect for long exposures, minimalist compositions, and dramatic wide-angle shots.

  • Travel to El Chaltén, the trekking capital of Patagonia and home to two of the most iconic peaks in the Southern Andes: Cerro Torre and Mount Fitz Roy.

  • Sunrise hikes and boat excursions to access incredible viewpoints of these dramatic granite monoliths, framed by winter skies and glacial lakes.

  • Opportunities for wildlife photography, including Andean condors soaring above the cliffs, foxes, hares, and native birdlife—all set against a backdrop of snow-covered peaks and pristine wilderness.

Throughout the tour, you’ll be supported by a small group of like-minded creatives and Timothy’s expert instruction—ensuring that whether you're focusing on dramatic landscapes, wildlife encounters, or intimate nature studies, you’ll return home with a portfolio of powerful, emotionally resonant images.

  • Capture the towering blue ice walls of this active glacier as it calves into Lago Argentino. Incredible textures, moody abstracts, and action shots await.

  • Photograph this iconic peak glowing in sunrise light, viewed from a variety of angles including frozen lagoons and elevated ridges.

  • Hike to dramatic vistas of the needle-like spire piercing through clouds, framed by snow-covered valleys and pristine wilderness.t goes here

  • A peaceful lake offering reflections of Fitz Roy, ideal for sunrise and sunset compositions.

  • A short hike to a stunning overlook with sweeping views of El Chaltén, Fitz Roy, and the Río de las Vueltas.
